Originally home to several tribes of Native Americans, this area of Illinois became home to Eastern settlers after the Indians moved west of the Mississippi in 1833, following the signing of the Indian Treaty. In 1834, many settlers arrived from Vermont and Massachusetts. In the next two decades, Rand Road would be built as a U.S. mail route, and the railroad would arrive from Chicago. The area’s rich soil appealed to many farmers, who most populated the area until after World War I, when many Chicago businessmen arrived to build their estates. These residents worked hard to maintain the green belt that residents enjoy today.
